December was a month of very special stories of giving, courage, and sacrifice for our country. Unlike anytime before, I spent much of the month feeling overwhelmed with both gratitude and sadness. It's been said that our lives have been changed forever, and while this is probably true, I won't give up hope for a new direction that will heal our deep wounds and guide us in our new future. I know 2002 will bring us new challenges and I would like to wish you well for the New Year.
A few weeks ago, I had a heartening visit to New York City. It was my first trip there since September 11 th and I was extremely impressed with the city. It was friendly and impeccably clean. As I walked around, I would look at the faces of the New Yorkers to see if there was something noticeably different-and there was. As an outsider, I felt the city was more patient and welcoming. I was in awe of the accomplishments in recovery and in making New York City the special place in the world it is.
