Where dreams do come true÷ In this issue weÌre celebrating VermontÌs two Olympic Gold Medalists for their performances in the snowboard halfpipe competitions. Ross Powers of South Londonderry is right here in our community and Kelly Clark of Mount Snow isnÌt too far away. WeÌre very proud of both athletes and rejoice in their victories. It was heartwarming to see our American teams compete so well and the camaraderie of athletes from around the world was touching to watch. It was a good reprieve to have the excitement of the Games to distract us for a short while from world events.

It was emotional, too, learning about some athleteÌs personal stories of adversity and triumph. Halfpipe Bronze Medalist, Chris Klug, overcame liver disease and underwent a liver transplant within the past year. I was so moved when he thanked the liver donorÌs family.

The 2002 U.S. Open Snowboarding Championships, the premier snowboarding event of the year, will be underway at Stratton Mountain March 14th-17th as it showcases competitive world-class snowboarding at its very best. Over 500 male and female riders representing more than 15 countries will flock to Stratton to make their mark in snowboarding history. The best riders in the worldÛincluding Olympic medalists Ross Powers, Kelly Clark, Danny Kass, and J.J. ThomasÛwill vie for top spots in the Quarterpipe, Halfpipe, Junior Jam Halfpipe, and Slopestyle events.

I want to let out-of-state skiers know that we still have some great skiing. The ski resorts have done a miraculous job providing us with good snow conditions during this unusual winter. WeÌve had a lot of warm weather this season but the skiing has been worth the trip. Come and hit the slopes; we have great spring skiing! Our inns are offering special spring value rates. Call or visit their website for more details.

A few years ago, Vermont maple syrup producers proclaimed the first Sunday after spring as "Maple Sunday." This year itÌs March 24th, and visitors are welcome to observe how maple syrup is made in local sugarhouses. ThereÌs maple candy samples and sugar-on-snow (weather permitting) and you can purchase maple syrup direct from the makers! ItÌs a fun and educational family outing so plan a visit in this quiet season. As you drive around the Manchester region, look for signs welcoming visitors to local sugarhouses.
